This topic summarises content on novel foods as well as genetically modified foods. Novel foods are foods that, for example, have an exotic origin or a very special composition and have therefore not previously been on the menu in the EU or even in Switzerland. Novel foods are only marketable after authorisation and are usually subject to restrictions on use. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are organisms whose genetic material has been deliberately altered. This plays a role with plants in food production, but also affects the nonfood sector with genetically modified crops and ornamental plants. The labelling "non-GMO" is also dealt with here.
